چکیده

[1] Two different innermost inner core (IMIC) models have recently been proposed, each with different radii and different orientation and strength of anisotropy. In order to test these IMIC models, we have systematically assembled a high quality dataset of broadband PKIKP data in the epicentral distance range of 150 to 180 . Our new dataset consists of 1,100 individually measured absolute PKIKP arrival times. Also, PKIKP bottoming points and ray paths in the inner core are well distributed in the east-west and north-south hemispheres. We invert this dataset for two layer models of anisotropy in the inner core and compare the fits obtained with those predicted from the existing IMIC models. Our results show that, if there is an IMIC, its radius is most likely around 500 km rather than the 300 km originally proposed, and is in better agreement with the layering in the inner core based on PKIKP waveform modeling. Complex seismic anisotropy in the top of the Earth’s inner core beneath Africa

[1] We report complex seismic anisotropy in the top 80 km of the Earth’s inner core beneath Africa. The anisotropy in the top 80 km of the inner core is constrained using differential travel times, amplitude ratios, and waveforms of the PKiKP-PKIKP phases sampling Africa along various directions. The differential PKiKP-PKIKP time residuals (relative to the Preliminary Reference Earth Model [PRE...

Seismic velocity structure in the Earth’s outer core

[1] We constrain seismic velocity structure in the Earth’s outer core by analyzing differential travel times, waveforms, and amplitude ratios of several pairs of core phases. We use differential travel times and waveforms of PKPbc-PKIKP at 144 –148 , PKiKP-PKIKP at 120 –141 , PKiKP-PKPBdiff at the PKP caustics distance range (141 –145 ), and differential travel times and amplitude ratios of PKP...

Inner core attenuation anisotropy

We investigate the attenuation structure of the Earth's inner core and its relationship to the velocity structure globally and along various sampling directions, by studying the amplitude ratios and the differential travel times of the PKiKP–PKIKP and PKPbc– PKIKP phases. Our observations reveal that the amplitude ratios of these core phases, like the differential travel times, vary in both sam...

Seismological Constraints on Inner Core Properties

We constrain seismic properties of the inner core using various body wave observations. In the epicentral distance range of 10−70 o , our high quality measurements of the amplitude ratio of PKiKP and PcP provide a new estimate of the density contrast (0.6-0.9 g/cm 3) at the Inner Core Boundary (ICB). This estimate is compatible with a recent reevaluation of normal mode data, and thus reconciles...

High-resolution probing of inner core structure with seismic interferometry

Increasing complexity of Earth’s inner core has been revealed in recent decades as the global distribution of seismic stations has improved. The uneven distribution of earthquakes, however, still causes a biased geographical sampling of the inner core. Recent developments in seismic interferometry, which allow for the retrieval of core-sensitive body waves propagating between two receivers, can...
